YOUNG GU KIM

Originally from South Korea, Young Gu Kim is a guitarist and composer. His passion for music leads him to travel the world.

In 2002, he began studying music formally at the Conservatory of Amsterdam where he received his bachelor’s degree in jazz music, and studied with Jesse van Ruller, Martijn van Iterson, Maarten van de Grinten, and Yuri Honing.

In Amsterdam, Young Gu was involved in various musical projects such as combos and concert big band. Also he joined an experimental orchestra to present the work of modern Swedish composer Fabian Svensson at Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ, Amsterdam’s foremost modern classical music venue.

While he was at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Young Gu was selected as one of the exchange students to Purchase College, New York where he had an opportunity to study with legendary guitarist John Abercrombie, and received the scholarship from AHK.

After graduating, he moved to New York City to attend a master’s program in jazz music at the City College of New York where he was able to study with John Patitucci, Steve Cardenas, Adam Cruz, and Connie Crothers.

In New York, he led regular sessions and performed at several music venues in NYC area, and also participated CUNY jazz festival in 2010 and 2011.

Besides schools, Young Gu has joined several masterclasses by Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield, Peter Bernstein, Chris Potter, Jack DeJonette, Fly, Barry Harris, and Fred Hersch, among others.

In 2007, he joined Jazz Ao Norte international seminar in Porto, Portugal, where he studied with Ben Monder, Donny McCaslin, David Binney and performed in trio with Hans Glawischnig and Adam Cruz.

In 2008, he was selected as one of the participants to join the first “Realtime Music Symposium” in Oslo, Norway, conducted by SIM faculty members Ralph Alessi, Ravi Coltrane, and Drew Gress. He met creative improvising musicians from all over the world, and performed at the Matine concert as part of the Oslo Jazz Festival.

 기타리스트이자 작곡가인 김영구는, 그의 정규적인 음악교육을 2002년도에 유럽의 명문인 The Conservatory of Amsterdam 에서 시작하게 되었다. 이곳에서 유럽정상의 뮤지션 들인 Jesse van Ruller, Martijn van Iterson, Maarten van de Grinten, Yuri Honing 등과 수학하였으며, 현지에서 다양한 음악적인 활동 (재즈콤보, 콘서트 빅밴드 활동 등) 에 참여하였다. 더욱이 실험적인 오케스트라에도 참여하여, 현대 스웨덴 작곡가인 Fabian Svensson 의 작품을 Amsterdam 을 대표하는 음악홀중 하나인 Muziekgebouw 에서 공연하기도 하였다.

또한 한국인 최초로 뉴욕 Purchase College 로의 교환학생으로도 선발되어 장학금을 수여 받았으며, 뉴욕에서는 전설적인 기타연주자인 John Abercrombie 와 수학하였다.

암스테르담에서 학사학위를 취득후, 다시 뉴욕으로 이동하여 The City College of New York 에서 석사 과정을 이수하게 되었다. John Patitucci, Steve Cardenas, Adam Cruz, Connie Crothers 등 기타연주자뿐만 아니라 다양한 분야의 정상의 음악가들로부터 사사받았으며, 뉴욕이라는 재즈의 메카에서 여러 음악가들과 교류하며 그의 음악적인 역량을 키웠다.

뉴욕에서는 다양한 클럽연주 활동 및, 2010, 2011년도에는 CUNY Jazz Festival 에도 참여하였다.

다양한 마스터클라스 (Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield, Peter Bernstein, Chris Potter, Jack DeJonette, Fly, Barry Harris, Fred Hersch 등) 에참여하였으며, 2007년에는 Porto, Portugal 에 위치한 Jazz Ao Norte international Seminar 에 참여하기도 하였다. 이 당시 Ben Monder, Donny McCaslin, David Binney 로부터 사사 받았으며, Hans Glawischnig 과 Adam Cruz 와 같이 트리오로 연주하기도 하였다.

그리고 2008년에는, Oslo, Norway 에서 열린 첫 번째 Realtime Music Symposium 에 선발되어 뉴욕 SIM의 교수진인 Ralph Alessi, Ravi Coltrane, Drew Gress 등과 같이 수학하였으며, 전 세계에서 선발된 뮤지션들과 Oslo Jazz Festival 의 일환인 Martine concert 에서 연주하였다.
